ACSS ADDS CDA CAPABILITY TO SAFEROUTE™

ORLANDO, November 9, 2005 –ACSS, an L-3 Communications & Thales Company, announced today that they will include Continuous Descent Arrivals (CDA) as part of the SafeRoute™ Merging & Spacing function. SafeRoute is a suite of ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) software solutions designed to improve safety and efficiency for flight operators in the airport environment.

The Merging & Spacing function will be available as a stand-alone function or combined with Surface Area Movement Management (SAMM). The first application of SafeRoute will be a fleet-wide installation for UPS, the world’s largest package delivery company and ninth largest airline.
           
“UPS is not only interested in the safety features of SAMM, but the efficiencies that are being built into the Merging & Spacing function,” said ACSS President Kris Ganase. “The CDA enhancement will deliver additional fuel savings as operators will no longer need to perform ‘step-down’ maneuvers as they approach the airport for landing.”

The Merging & Spacing (M&S) function makes use of on-board aircraft surveillance and a display to provide flight deck spacing commands that allow aircraft to follow one another at the safest, most efficient interval possible from cruise altitude to the runway. M&S will ensure more consistent aircraft spacing while increasing capacity and efficiency within the terminal airspace.

“Successful trials with CDAs flown last year show the potential to achieve a 30 percent reduction in noise and three percent reduction in emissions,” said Capt. Karen Lee, UPS Director of Flight Operations. “We also expect significant fuel savings from keeping our planes at higher altitudes longer and being able to get our planes on the ground faster.”

The SAMM application provides flight crews with an airport surface map and tracks the movements of their aircraft and other ground and airborne traffic in the terminal area, and alerts crews of potential conflicts. The SAMM module within SafeRoute delivers enhanced situational awareness by using aircraft onboard surveillance technology. It uses ADS-B, TIS-B (Traffic Information Service-Broadcast) and the EFB to display airport runways/taxiways and reduce the possibility of runway incursions.
